Talented and Gifted (TAG) Services

The following courses are currently offered to TAG (Talented and Gifted) students at Bridger. They both run for 6 weeks, and meet once a week from 10:00-11:30 am.

Physics of Light (Offered to 3rd and 4th graders)

Students will be wowed by the fantastic properties of light. Using prisms, lenses and optics they will investigate how light can be separated, concentrated, bent, and generated. Your students will experiment with pin hole cameras, mirrors and solar energy. In class, they will discover and recreate Newton's experiments in spectroscopy, colors, lenses, reflection, refraction, and more.

Computer Animation (Offered to 3rd and 4th graders)

Today's kids have access to an incredible variety of interactive games, stories, animations, simulations, and other types of dynamic, interactive media on their computers. However, for the most part, these programs are a one - way street: you can only browse and click what others have created; you can't design and create your own. This class will teach students how to design and program their own animated clips or games by combining graphics, photos, music, and other sound into interactive creations using the programming platform Scratch®.

Please direct any questions, comments, or concerns to TAG Coordinator Seth Jones at (503) 916-6336 or by email.

TAG Enrollment

In the beginning of the school year, teacher and/or parents can nominate students to participate in the Talented and Gifted program.

Students who are new to our district and/or have been in a Talented and Gifted program in their previous school district will need to be nominated for the TAG program in the Portland School District.

This process involves:

  • Two nomination forms - one by a parent and one by a teacher
  • A review of school history and social/emotional variables
  • Two rated work samples demonstrating student's strengths in math, reading or cognitive ability
  • One standardized test in area of student's strength

The Bridger TAG Leadership Team reviews these materials and a recommendation is sent to the district TAG office. The TAG office finalizes the decision, and then notifies the school and the parents.

Forms

These forms help parents assess their child in characteristics that are often common behaviors of the TAG child.
